all change at torro rosso

The news came as a bit of a shock, and more so not doubt to Seb and Jaime, but, as a stance, we have to admire the principle that Torro Rosso are adopting. Where we have a problem is in that they seem to have made it up the other day; why else did they not let their existing drivers know earlier so that they had chance to chase some of the other rides?

And having them fulfilling PR duties up until the day before the announcement does seem a touch cynical to say the least.

Hopefully the new lads will do well, and that Seb and Jaime can pick up a ride elsewhere. They both deserve it.

Weekend round up – 20th November 2011 #NASCAR – Go Smoke!

#Nascar – What a way to end the season! Our opposition to the chase format remains, but to have the two title contenders slug it out, winner takes all was awesome. All credit to both Carl and Tony for a fantastic race, and to all of the other drivers for managing to avoid doing anything stupid in that last 35 or so laps to allow a straight fight at the front under green flag conditons.

Nice to hear from Carl after the race, losing with dignity.

The chase may be idiotic to us, but this has to be the best way to end a season.

The #F1 Silly Season drags on

So will Robert make a come back at Renault (sorry, Lotus)? Has the Barra Boy had his time at Williams? Who will be Forcing India?

It’s all getting a bit boring really and we wish that they would all make their minds up. Maybe Robert is the key to some of this and it will be a shame if all of that great potential is lost to F1 should he be unable to make a return. It could be that it is already too late, and that a year off will have dulled the edge.

That would also apply to the Ice Man of course, but he has long been an enigma. Could he make a difference in a Williams. or would a return to F1 in mid grid just bore him rigid? Would we notice if it did? All these questions’ let’s have some answers.

As for the name changes, well we are pleased that it has all gone through, but can’t really understand why there was all that fuss. Yes there can be complications over a name; we here are old enough to remember 1967 and Gulf’s Mirage win at Spa causing a bit of controversy because it didn’t count as a Ford win for manufacturer points even if it was just a modified GT40, but that is hardly relevant in modern F1. There are far more important issues for the constructors and ruling body to be considering; for a start the former mob could get on with sorting out their drivers for 2012.

Weekend round up – 23 October 2011 #DTM #NASCAR

#DTM Jamie Green close out the season with a win at and Miquel Molina follows up a good back end to the season with a second pole position and third place in the race. Looking forward to next year and the return of BMW.

#NASCAR Mark Martin still has it with a pole position, but problems related to that final caution dropped him back and robbed Jeff Gordon of a drafting partner. Problems for both Ugly Brothers cheered us up here as did the top three at the finish. Good to see Clint win one as his time at RCR runs out, great to see Jeff Burton a close second, and also great to see Dave Blaney pick up a good result.

Interesting stuff about the #48 car and that radio transmission. Oops!

Martinsville next weekend. Always a tight one. Where will Smoke end up? We don’t think that his season is anywhere near done yet.

#Marco – We don’t usually mention the blokes who race with only half the required number of wheels here, but sseveral of our favourite drivers of old started on bikes and we have a huge respect for those guys. So it was sad to hear that they had a tragic weekend and lost one of the promising younger riders. RIP Marco.

Weekend round up – 16th October 2011 #F1 #NASCAR #BTCC #Indycar

Toggle & I are up and about early for tea and toast and tend to check for the US results that have come in after our (early) bedtime. So to open up the computer before dawn this morning and be greeted by the news from Vegas was a real shock. We’ll come back to IndyCars at the end of the round up, but RIP Dan Wheldon and thanks for all the memories. Condolences to the Wheldon family and our thoughts are with the whole Indy racing community and to all those fans, officials and corner workers at the track whose night ended so tragically.

#F1 Korean GP – So Seb wins another one, but redemption for Lewis? Certainly that was a much more committed and confident looking performance both in qualifying and the race. And as for Massa’s claims that Hamilton is dangerous, well it didn’t stop Webbo having the confidence in him to go wheel to wheel on a few occasions do it? Like Lewis, Felipe is in a dark place right now and needs some good results too.

A horrible track though, and where were the crowds again? The rubbish places the circus has to go to these days in search of Bernie’s dollars.

#NASCAR – Has the #48 resurgence come to an end? After two good results to lull back and early contact with the wall sends JJ to pretty much the back of the pack in the race and a big tumble in the points. A good day for the Blue Oval boys though, with 4 cars in the top 7. Good to see the RPM cars doing well again and maybe we’ll get to see the #43 back in victory lane again soon.

Five races to go and  fairly open still.

#BTCC – Well done Matt Neal on another title. DJ is old enough to have seen your Dad racing.

#IndyCar – What can we say? Motor racing is dangerous and times like this bring back the immortal words of Sid Collins from Indy in 1964. You can find the full text of his eulogy to Eddie Sachs elsewhere in our archives here (perhaps because of yesterday’s tragedy that post has had over 100 hits today alone).

There is no point saying that the track is at fault. There have always been dangerous tracks and Motor Sport featured various views on Spa in its old guise last month as an example. For our US friends, maybe Langhorne Speedway would be an appropriate equivalent, albeit for different reasons? If you take away the danger you take away the sport. Losing someone is always hard, but as long as we race there will always be the risk that it will happen.

Best wishes to Pippa, Will and JR for speedy recoveries. Congratulations to Dario and his team for another title, commiserations to Will and Penske for coming up just a touch short again.

We’ve been critical here of the Indy organisers for some of what they’ve done in recent times, but have to hand it to them for the dignified way they seem to have handled yesterday’s events and plans for the awards ceremony. You did the right thing. And the 5 lap tibute was a nice touch.
