Weekend roundup – 6th May 2012 #NASCAR #DTM

This weekend saw plenty of tin top action with #NASCAR from Talladega, #DTM from Lausitz and the #WTCC crowd in Hungary. The Le Mans boys were at it at Spa and the Ardennes turned the rain on and off over the race as it so often does.

Over the course of the weekend we Tweeted various updates and results from these events and others, so check through our Tweet list for those. Meanwhile, here’s our weekend wrap up:

Down in Alabama the #NASCAR boys had a fairly uneventful first half of the Sunday race before The Big One struck later. Another biggish one later and some re-start silliness saw it come down to a shoot out.

The Roush Fords of Biffle and Kenseth had been front runners all night, but on the final restart they lost the drafting plot and Ugly Jnr pushed BK in the #2 Dodge to the front. Now the younger Ugly Brother had led into the last lap on Saturday and then got jumped on the run to the line. Come Sunday and he thought that he was sitting pretty coming into that last lap in second, but this didn’t work either as Keselowski just shook him off and ran the #2 away with the race. Instead of owning up, little ugly just blames his equipment; starting to sound a bit like Ugly Snr in his Penske days?

Anyway, a first win for Dodge at ‘Dega since the 1970’s and, harking back to those days and before, Jeff Gordon had won his 71st pole to keep up a record of at least one a year for 20 years, equalling the record of Dave Pearson.

In Germany the #DTM ran its second round of the series and this time in was BMW making the comeback with their first win since Hockenheim in 1982. Canadian Bruno Spengler got the win this time having taken the lead from the second row into turn one and held it, under strong pressure from Gary Paffett’s Mercedes, for the rest of the race, the gap being less than 1.5 seconds at any time for the whole 52 laps. Close stuff.
